Reflective Essay 4

Reflective Essay 4 – Total 200 words

Choose two of the above quotations, and find one more similar one yourself. Then write 50 words about each one. In your paragraphs you should:

·         Say who said it and when

·         Say what it means

·         Say why this is important

·         Explain why it is relevant to your Cultural Diversity course

·         Say why you chose it

     Many quotations have been told by famous people, in this essay I’m going to talk about few quotations and explain what they mean.

To begin with the first quotation which was said by DD. Eisenhower in 1961 which says “The world must learn to work together, or finally it will not work at all”.  In this quotation he means that if people didn’t cooperate nothing will be done.  I think it is important because people must stand by each other side and work together, and it seems that it is relevant to my Cultural Diversity course because it shows that people must work together and if that didn’t happen nothing will be completed.  I choose this quotation because it is the most important thing in life to be done by people in the world.

The second quotation I’m going to talk about was said by Mahatma Gandhi in 1040s,” A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and souls of its people.”  What was meant here is that the culture begins with the people in childhood and when they grow up it stays in their hearts and in their soul.  It is important because every people has their own culture tradition which they always remember no matter what happens to them from childhood till they grow up, this quotation is relevant to the Cultural Diversity course because it starts with what people learn from childhood what they have to know about their culture so they stay remembering it till they grow. I’ve chosen this quote because it attracted me and I think that children should always care about their culture and learn what is right from wrong.

Finally and the last quotation was said by Samuel Butler and it was between 1835 – 1902 he said “A man should be just cultured enough to be able to look with suspicion upon culture at first, not second hand” he meant that every man should know enough about his culture and to be aware so to have more experience in life. It’s important because men have more positions and responsibilities in culture than woman do, because most of related things in culture are done by men. It is relevant to Cultural Diversity because we must know more about culture because it is the main thing of the country, I choose it because men should have more experience and knowledge about culture and it must be the main thing to be known.

In conclusion, there are many beneficial things that we can learn from other people, usually what famous people says, they already have been tried or they’ve known about it from before so they won’t say things which is bad to be learned.

LSS 2053 Cultural Diversity

Name: Saif AlTamimi
Section: CET

Ethnocentrism

1. On the lines below, write a definition of Ethnocentrism. Find one on the web.

Some people think that their country is the best than others in some ways and that is very dangerous because it can be done wars between countries. For example in the UAE before in childhood we were in school some kids thought that UAE country is better than Lebanon, maybe because of they are rich and that makes racism between kids and after that it causes fighting between some UAE kids with Lebanese kids.

2. Read the cartoon. How is Ethnocentrism reflected in the conversation below?

<!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->
Write your answer on the lines below.
Some people are interested to know about other cultures of countries, but in the other way some other kind of people try to ignore that and disrespect it when people do it.  The story talks about a man called Tom who seems that he is very interested to know about world cultural preservation and there was an annoying character who known as Bucky, he was trying to annoy Tom of watching the program about world cultural preservation and it shows from his attitude that he is intolerant character.

 3. Looking at the cartoon characters.

Imagine them in social situations. What kind of people would (would n’t) they associate with? What kind of events (movies, shows) would (would n’t) they prefer to go? Think of other situations.

Describe Bucky

<!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->

Bucky is a character who is prejudges and his type is the kind of people who don’t want to know about others culture and they are intolerance and tries to distract others when they are interested to know about world cultural preservation , and they dislike to deal with people from different culture.

Describe the man talking with Bucky. Let’s call him Tom
<!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->

Tom is an intelligent person who seems that he is interested to know about world cultural preservation and he is a polite man who can deal with people in a good behavior. In addition, when Bucky tried to distract him of watching the program he stopped him and explained to him about world cultural but Bucky was intolerant and didn’t want to listen to what he was saying.

4. Drawing Ethnocentrism.

On a separate sheet of paper, make a drawing of Ethnocentrism. You don’t have to draw well.

Reflective essay 3

Cultural diversity is the cultural variety and cultural differences that exist in the world, a society, or an institution. There are multiple types of cultural diversity which are stereotype, prejudice, and discrimination. In this essay I am going to compare these types of cultures toward my own experience and culture.

The first type is stereotyping is a belief in an image or distorted truth about a person or group. For an example, in my culture Muslims and Israelis are known to be enemies because of our different beliefs and religions. Moreover, what we call a "Red eye" which is when someone likes something and not saying the word "Mashalla" something atrocious might happen to the person or thing that he like.

Furthermore, prejudice is an opinion, prejudgment or attitude about a group or individual members. For an example, people in my age call friends or cousins that don't move a lot or lazy “Sudanese" because Sudanese people usually are known to be lazy. Second example of prejudice is appropriate for boy and girl teenagers to walk and go out together in public places because of the rumors.

In addition, discrimination is the behavior that treats people unequally because of their group memberships. As an example, Arab’s have less respect for the drivers and maids because of the fact that the work for them. Also Arab’s tend to judge people toward having luxurious stuff or cheap stuff, and most importantly last names.

In conclusion, in my opinion, I think learning these cultures will help me in how to treat people in a respectful way and to admiration nationalities because we are all humans and there is no difference between us, we have to be more open minded in our social life.

Thoughts and comments of the video

 The video is about an English teacher thinks that he has the ability to teach English language to a multicultural class , and my comment on the video that in the class there was racism between some of them for example the Chines and the Japanese men was because of the political issues, and sexism was the French woman and the Greek and Spanish men when they wanted to sit next to her.

Melting pot: All the immigration used to be required to lose their birth identity and culture on arrival in the new country. They had to become assimilated or the same as everyone else in the host country. (that was the way in the past)
 Garden salad: Immigrants to a new country such as Australia can keep their birth identity and culture , as well as learning the host country’s culture. This is acculturation.
